Authentication and Authorization Fundamentals: Identity Management, Authentication Systems, Browser Technicalities, and Troubleshooting

Sunday, March 3, 2024, 1:00-5:00 pm CST

This Pre-Conference Workshop will take place live in-person only. Course participants will attend this 4-hour course at the AT&T Conference Center in Austin, Texas.

Ticket Cost: $175/ ticket

Registration is now closed for workshops.

About this workshop:

Understanding the basics of authentication and resource access issues as they relate to libraries addresses a number of the core competencies for electronic resources librarians as established by the NASIG: Technology, Effective Communication, Supervising and Management, and Personal Qualities. It also contributes to Implementation: Access in the Techniques for Electronic Resource Management (TERMS) framework. This hands-on workshop will walk through the following:

  • connecting users and resources from user accounts (identity management),
  • determining the account is being used by the genuine user (authentication),
  • granting them access to licensed content (authorization).

You will come away with a basic understanding of the technologies that support access and a familiarity with the various products that use those technologies (from both the library’s and user’s point of view). We will talk about pros and cons and how it is often not possible to use only one technology. We will look at how these tools support users’ research and how we can enhance their experience while protecting their privacy. We will also share the latest news on upcoming changes to browser technology that will affect our practices for years to come.

At the end of the workshop, you will have a framework for mapping out your own institution’s interlocking systems and the vocabulary to communicate with all stakeholders.

Who should attend this course?

This workshop is meant for librarians and professional staff who are looking to expand their knowledge on resource access and identity authentication.
