DESCRIPTION:

This workshop is an opportunity for participants to explore the different phases of preparing for, negotiating and implementing transformative agreements–together with the library and consortium experts who produced the ESAC Reference Guide to TAs. Topics will include: How to derive key insights based on data, Engage stakeholders and plan communications, Understand your negotiation counterparts and the current environment, Define your negotiation approach and goals, Finding common ground in negotiations, Key information and data exchange, Agreement terms, Workflows, Monitoring and Assessment.

Participants in the workshop will be able to:

  • critically assess publisher offers of transformative agreements,
  • develop data-based open-access negotiation strategies,
  • produce talking points to garner support for negotiations from institutional stakeholders,
  • plan for workflow and process adjustments needed for implementation, and more.

Course Instructors

Colleen Campbell is strategic advisor for external engagement at the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL). There she coordinates two open access initiatives: the Open Access 2020 Initiative, a global alliance of research organizations and their libraries that are repurposing their investments in subscriptions to support open access publishing, and the ESAC Initiative, a library community of practice building capacities around transformative and open access publishing agreements. She is a member of the LIBER Open Access Working Group and serves on the Managing Board of EIFL, a not-for-profit organization that works with libraries to enable access to knowledge in developing and transition economy countries.

Ádám Dér is a member of the license management team of the Max Planck Digital Library (MPDL), where his main responsibilities lie in publisher negotiations to advance the open access transition in scholarly publishing. In this role he is involved in a broad range of strategic activities, including data analyses and financial modelling for Germany’s nationwide DEAL negotiations. He is an expert advisor in the ESAC Initiative on data analytics, OA workflows and transformative agreements and contributes to a variety of international industry boards and initiatives. Prior to his role at MPDL, he served as Head of Development of the Hungarian National Consortium (EISZ).
